Russia to Merge Air, Space Forces in 2015
Moscow, Russia (Sputnik) Jan 14, 2015 -
Russia will create an Air-Space Force from the merger of its Air Force and Space Forces in 2015, the country's Armed Forces General Staff chief, Valery Gerasimov, said Tuesday.
"A new type of armed forces will be created in 2015, the Air-Space Forces, by combining two already existing types of military armed forces: the Air Force and Space Forces," Gerasimov said.

Minimizing Uncertainty in Designing Complex Military Systems
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 14, 2015 -
Uncertainty is sometimes unavoidable. But in the world of scientific computing and engineering, at least, what's worse than uncertainty is being uncertain about how uncertain one is.
Understanding with confidence the level of uncertainty in computational models used for designing complex military systems-such as new aerospace vehicles and engines, for example-can be enormously beneficial, ...

First satellite visible imagery of FY-2G successfully acquired
Beijing (XNA) Jan 14, 2015 -
At 13:00 of January 8, National Satellite Meteorological Centre (NSMC) of China Meteorological Administration (CMA) successfully acquired the first satellite visible imagery of FY-2G. The imagery is quite clear and in focus.
"Compared with YF-2F satellite, the YF-2G further suppresses the stray light of satellite imagery and significantly improve the imagery quality. The first satellite vi ...

Decoding the gravitational evolution of dark matter halos
Tokyo, Japan (SPX) Jan 14, 2015 -
Researchers at Kavli IPMU and their collaborators have revealed that considering environmental effects such as a gravitational tidal force spread over a scale much larger than a galaxy cluster is indispensable to explain the distribution and evolution of dark matter halos around galaxies.
A detailed comparison between theory and simulations made this work possible. The results of this stud ...

Asteroid to Fly By Earth Safely on January 26
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jan 14, 2015 -
An asteroid, designated 2004 BL86, will safely pass about three times the distance of Earth to the moon on January 26. From its reflected brightness, astronomers estimate that the asteroid is about a third of a mile (0.5 kilometers) in size. The flyby of 2004 BL86 will be the closest by any known space rock this large until asteroid 1999 AN10 flies past Earth in 2027.
At the time of its cl ...

Alaskan sounding rocket studies role of solar wind on Earth's atmosphere
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 14, 2015 -
The interaction of solar winds and Earth's atmosphere produces northern lights, or auroras, that dance across the night sky and mesmerize the casual observer. However, to scientists this interaction is more than a light a display. It produces many questions of the role it plays in Earth's meteorological processes and the impact on the planet's atmosphere.
To help answer some of these quest ...

Ground-breaking research to discover new planets
Belfast, UK (SPX) Jan 14, 2015 -
Scientists from Queen's University Belfast have partnered with leading astrophysicists across Europe for a ground-breaking space research project that will form a crucial step in the quest to study small, rocky planets orbiting other stars and discover new planets.
The Next-Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) has achieved first light at the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Paranal Observ ...
